Sara N. has been a member with us for just over a year and has quickly become one of the hardest working athletes we have.  She has a reserved but competitive nature, quietly making her presence known during workouts.

"It really has been life changing for me. It took me a while post babies to remember to do something for myself. I am so grateful that I was brave enough to take that first step by walking into that box a year ago."

Coach Bane said, "When I first started coaching Sara, she was very quiet and shy and I couldn't tell if she was enjoying CrossFit. But there's no longer any doubt that she loves doing CrossFit! She has come a long way in a short amount of time increasing her raw strength and becoming more mechanically sound with her weightlifting, not to mention, she has quite the motor! I enjoy coaching Sara because she's extremely eager to learn more and do more, always seeking extra knowledge and assistance from the coaches. I cannot wait to see how far she's come in another year!"

How did you discover [CSC] CrossFit?

We moved from Seattle just under a year ago and before we moved, we were on our computers looking up all the closest CrossFit boxes to where our house is located. We wanted to hit the ground running once we moved in and unpacked our gym clothes! CSC was nearest, but I was also drawn to the gym because it was outside the hubbub of Austin proper and we were excited to be somewhat removed from the city. I also liked the size. I wanted to feel part of a community and not be lost in the shuffle of a huge gym.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Since May 2014…It really has been life changing for me.  It took me a while post babies to remember to do something for myself.  I was so consumed with pouring everything into them that I forgot what it was like to be that person I was before kids. Doing this has given so much back to me. I am so grateful that I was brave enough to take that first step by walking into that box a year ago.

What fitness goal(s) would you like to achieve in 2015?

I would love to be more efficient in some of my Olympic lifts. I forget that I have hips and glutes sometimes. I would love to get muscle up's, both bar and rings; and handstand walks, and…the list goes on!

What is your favorite thing about CSC CrossFit?

From the moment I walked in to CSC, I never felt intimidated or like I shouldn't be there. I have always felt welcomed with open arms. I can't tell you how great it feels to move to a new city not knowing a soul and feeling right off the bat like you have a community. People are invested in others and seeing how everyone supports each other during the WODs is one of my favorite things. It has been great getting to know all the members! (and fellow 12:30ers!)

Name something we would be surprised to know about you.

I am a trained Pastry Chef, but before that, I graduated from UW with a BS in Zoology. My first job was as a Zoo Keepers Assistant, so you can guess what I spent my days doing: weighing kangaroo poop in baggies, shoveling hay into the exhibits, spraying down the mountain parrots oh-so-dirty cages. It was no glamorous affair, but it made me appreciate that line of work so much.

Mark G. has been another "lead by example" athlete that has been working out with us since late 2013. He has continued to progress in every aspect of CrossFit and walks in the door on a daily basis eager to learn.

"Living a healthy and balanced life is not always easy...Most of my motivation comes from setting a good example for my boys.”

Check out some of his recent Personal Records he's set:

1st Muscle Up - April 2015

215# Front Squat

165# Clean & Jerk

Coach Robert said, "It's been fun watching Mark progress as an athlete. He has shown tremendous improvement since he first started back in December 2013. He shows up early to and stays late to every class soaking up tips and critiques in order to become the best athlete he can be. It's great coaching someone like Mark because he really listens to our coaching cues. I love Mark's competitiveness and eagerness to push his limits, both in and outside of The Combine!"

How did you discover [CSC] CrossFit?

As an obstacle course racer, I was looking to get stronger. I heard about CrossFit from other racers and my neighbor when I saw an ad for The Combine in the Community Impact paper. After a little more research and watching some of the 2013 CrossFit Games, I decided to give it a try.

Who inspires/motivates you?

Most of my motivation comes from setting a good example for my boys. Living a healthy and balanced life is not always easy, but I do my best. Secondarily, I enjoy competition and having goals keeps me focused. Obstacle races and CrossFit competitions have taken that to a new level.

Which Girls Benchmark is your favorite?

Helen! Running is still important to me...and I never know when I might need to outrun a bear or zombie!

Where are you from originally?

I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago and spent a lot of time in an area referred to as Wrigleyville. I still love Chicago, but Austin is definitely "home."

What "ah ha" moments have you had in CrossFit?

Since starting CrossFit in January 2014, I've had more "ah ha" moments than in the last decade! The biggest one -- I've always had a tremendous amount of patience for many situations, but I found I had little for myself. Scaling and incremental improvement was not something I allowed myself before CrossFit and that is something that has fundamentally changed me.
