Steven Shepherd - August 2015 Spotlight
It’s hard to believe that Steven is the same guy who walked into our doors in the fall of 2014. He was very apprehensive about diving into CrossFit and yet knew he needed a change in his life for the better. It was time to get his health on track. Ten months later, Steven is 30 pounds lighter and says feels better than he has in 20 years! He is better able to keep up with his teenage son-- who is also a CSC CrossFit member--and looks forward to checking a few more goals off of the list in the coming year. Way to go, Steven!
"Not only has Steven made ridiculous body composition changes, but his function and movement amazes me and improves daily. That not only inspires other classmates but has to impress his college son Bennett who recently joined too. It's pretty cool to watch them work out together," says Coach Bane.
What fitness goal(s) would you like to achieve in the next year? I’d like to drop a couple more pounds and reduce the number of modifications I currently use in my workouts. I need to work on double-unders, pull-ups, handstand walks and rope climbs (just to name a few...)
What is your favorite thing about CSC CrossFit? The coaches and its members! Everyone is very supportive. It is not an environment where people are competing against each other, only themselves.
What "ah ha" moments have you had in CrossFit? The foam rollers really are your friend, Bane and Gina helped me get my quads out of a knot and through some activation exercises, got my backside doing its part. Once I understood the rhythm of kipping pull-ups right, it made a lot more sense.
What fitness accomplishment are you most proud of? Getting in better shape. I have dropped about 30 pounds and added 10lbs muscle. The conditioning has helped me keep up with my son when we go mountain or road biking - he still leads the way, but not by as much.
When you are not working out, how do you spend your free time? Visiting local state parks, biking, hiking, working at WestCave and the 'to-do' list at home is never ending.
Name your three favorite CrossFit movements or lifts. I have come to like front squats, push presses, and liked taters - those were new for me. Burpees suck by the way.
