How did you hear about CSC CrossFit/The Combine?

I heard about CSC CrossFit/The Combine via an advertisement in the Circle C Community newsletter. I was looking for something to break me out of a fitness rut (ie, just running occasionally), and decided to give CrossFit a try.

Why did you start CrossFit?  

I started CrossFit in the Fall of 2011, hoping to lose weight and gain strength. To be specific, I took a pistol shooting course and was pissed off at myself for not being able to hold the gun steady for an extended period of time due to lack of arm/shoulder strength. It was a wake up call that made me realize how much strength I had lost since I’d stopped carrying my daughters around. When I was younger, I never had to work very hard to build or keep muscle…but that has changed (I’m pushing 40) and CrossFit has proven to be a great remedy.

What has crossfit at The Combine done for you personally? Physically?

Where to start? Like so many of the athletes in The Combine community, I work full time in a pretty demanding job. I work in the media industry, and let’s just say that CrossFit has given me some much-needed balance in terms of being able to focus on concrete goals that are completely up to me to meet. I love the black/white nature of CrossFit – either I lifted more than the last time, or ran faster, or not. No subjectivity or interpretation, and nobody’s fault but mine if I didn’t perform. It’s me vs. me, and I love that as far as my emotional well-being. Physically, I feel strong again and have lost a significant amount of body fat (and am working on dropping more weight!). My friends and colleagues have commented on the changes in my physique and the definition in my arms. Finally, having no formal athletic training in my background, I absolutely love discovering my own strengths and learning how to make my body perform most efficiently.

What do you like most about CrossFit? 

First, I love the people. The athletes and coaches are all FULLY dedicated to seeing everyone in the group improve and grow.

Everyone at the Combine, coaches and members alike, is so supportive and friendly. I volunteered to work for the CrossFit Regional Games last year and loved the energy of the crowd and competitors.  What a privilege to be on the floor with those athletes! Second, I love the scope of CrossFit. There are WODs that push me far outside my comfort zone – ie, I hate being upside down and have no background in gymnastics. But that gave me a goal and something to strive towards. There’s always something new to conquer in CrossFit. Lastly, I love the efficiency of CrossFit. I work out for one hour a day, three days a week, which really is not a huge commitment, and have seen amazing results. In the coming year, I intend to carve out more time for CrossFit so that I can reap even more benefits.

What do you like most about The Combine?  

There are many things I love about The Combine. One – the coaches and members are fantastic. Everyone is supportive and driven, so people who want to be at the top of their game always surround you and push you. This brings everyone up! Two – I love that I can drop in for scheduled classes whenever I can make it versus committing to certain days/times each week. Like most working parents, my schedule is too unpredictable to commit to a set schedule. Third – the class sizes are small enough to get individualized coaching while working within a group. With each workout, I get one-on-one attention to improve my technique and form.


What goals have you set and reached since starting at The Combine?  

My overarching goal was simply to become stronger and regain/retain muscle mass while moving towards my 40s. For sure, I’ve done that! I’ve lost over 5% body fat so far. When I started, I struggled to strict press 50 lbs. Within 6 months, I was at 70 lbs. With my deadlift, I started at 185 and did 230 lbs 6 months later.


What are your 3 favorite exercises? 

My three favorite exercises are deadlifts, cleans, and rowing. I’m getting a lot better at overhead lifts and hope to add one of those to my favorites soon.
