Lann Bookout has been a member here at The Combine since July ’12.  Lann is a great depiction of what kind of results one can expect to see with patience, determination, consistency and dedication.  He is almost 60 years young and has made unbelievable changes in his body composition, losing over 20 pounds, dropping his body fat significantly and improving his overall quality of life.

Not only that, but below is just one example of how his strength, body awareness and endurance has improved.  Last month we re-evaluated one of our favorite Benchmark workouts, “Cindy.”  Lann’s 1st attempt at her he did awesome and completed 10 rounds (which is over 50 pull-ups) and did his pull-ups with 2 large bands.  Last month he completed 11+5 rounds of “Cindy” RX’d.  That’s 60 pull-ups with no assistance from the bands!!!!  Pretty ridiculous!

Here's a little more info about Lann and his CrossFit experience with us. 

How did you hear about The Combine? 

Since I live near Dripping Springs I pass the Combine every day, so when a friend of mine told me he was in his second foundation session and he explained to me why he could barely move I got interested.

Why did you want start CrossFit?

I started because I needed help in the form of directed workouts because I spent a lot of time in gym's wandering around and working out ineffectively.  I had never worked out with weights and so I never did it right and never got into the shape I wanted to be in.  I had fallen way out of shape and because I am almost 60, I had lost a lot of mobility, flexibility and strength.  I had to do something to regain that.  

What has CrossFit done for you personally, emotionally and physically?

Although I’ve only been CrossFitt’ing for 10 months, I am a lot stronger and mobile now and feel my quality of life has improved.   I am learning the proper technique to lift, my entire core is stronger and my ability to recover has improved also.  

What do you like most about The Combine and CrossFit?

I love the environment, the staff and CrossFit members are friendly and supportive which really helps during a tough AMRAP or recovering from one.  What I like most is the variety offered by the CrossFit program and that we're all in this for the gains.  I also love the camaraderie between all the members.  I know this is weird but I also like the gym and that there’s no ac or heating, it makes us tougher and I feel healthier.  We also have lots of room and equipment to work with from weights, pull-up bars and tires to giant concrete boulders.  

What goals have you set and achieved since you’ve been working out here?

I have met one goal of losing weight (at least 20 pounds)!!  I’m still working on core strengths and flexibility issues, but I feel so much stronger than when I started.

What are your 3 favorite exercises?

My favorite exercises are bench press, pull-ups and box jumps. I am working on learning to like exercises with Russian or Turkish in the title but that’s apparently going to take a while.
