Jason C  brings a healthy dose of humor and encouragement to class, but don't let that fool you. He is all business when it's, "3, 2, 1, GO!" He loves to lift heavy, but is willing to step back to correct his form and/or work on his mobilty. That said, his mobility and body awareness has improved greatly. Jason is Firefighter that carries only a shredded 10% Body Fat and his job demands a high level of fitness and performance.

"I also want to say that CrossFit has helped me in my career.  I don't usually lie on my back and press things up, but I do run, climb things, carry things long distances, pick heavy things off the floor and over my shoulder, and swing a sledge hammer."

He was also one of the few that met New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Peyton when he dropped in for a WOD last year.  Below are a few questions we asked Jason about his experience at The Combine:

How did you discover (CSC) CrossFit?

I had actually been interested in CrossFit at The Combine since the first time I drove by, but was very intimidated by it. I was intimidated by the intensity of some of the workouts and all the horror stories about CrossFit and associated injuries.  After years and years of monotonous weight lifting and running, I tried triathlons. I liked them, but soon became monotonous. I knew CrossFit was anything but that.  It was constantly new, constantly changing, constantly challenging.  Again, I wanted to find a gym that concentrated on form, safe lifting, and cleanliness.  I struck gold with The Combine and its coaches!

What's your go-to "cheat" meal/restaurant?

I don't really have a go to "cheat meal."  I don't discriminate.  I love ALL food equally.  I will say that the avocado egg rolls at BJ's Brewhouse are the BOMB!

Name something we would be surprised to know about you.

As a child, I was very obese and very unhealthy.  I spent my high school days around 240 pounds! Second, I'm a really shy guy. Really, I am!  That’s something I love about the people at The Combine… EVERYONE is so approachable and easy to get along with!

What "ah ha" moments have you had in CrossFit?

This may not sound like much, but an “ah ha” moment for me that I had in cross fit is box jumps. Some people are scared of snakes, some of spiders and my fear was box jumps.  The moment I learned (read: forced by Kady) that I could actually jump on a 24-inch box multiple times was incredible. That one thing I had been scared of my entire life working out was smashed! My next thought was "Ah ha, I can do it, what else can I do?" It was very exciting!

What fitness accomplishment are you most proud of?

Although I have been increasing my PR's on all my lifts and starting to get more mobility in my shoulder,  I think the fitness goal I am most excited about is my weight.  I have put on a lot of weight since starting, but my body fat percent is pretty consistent= winning!

I also want to say that CrossFit has helped me in my career.  I don't usually lie on my back and press things up, but I do run, climb things, carry things long distances, pick heavy things off the floor and over my shoulder, and swing a sledge hammer.

When you are not working out, how do you spend your free time?

When I'm not working out, I spend my free time playing with my pup, all of the outdoorsy stuff, and driving down to see my parents.  I'm pretty boring.

I'd like to thank everyone at The Combine for being so approachable, encouraging, and competitive all at the same time.  This gym, its trainers, and community have really brought me out of my comfort zone, physically AND socially, and I appreciate it all.

Mike, AKA "Frost", "Big Mike", "Chalkmonster" has been a member since The Combine opened in 2011, but manages the same level of energy, passion and determination to succeed as he has always demonstrated. His openness to continue learning matches his enthusiasm and encouragement towards his peers. And look out for his, "Mat and a half" shouts during broad jumps!

"My favorite thing about CSC CrossFit is the community and coaches...We may want to kick each other's butts in the WOD, but we are there for each other when one of us is struggling. We all have those days when things just are not working and it's great to have everyone’s support."

What fitness goal(s) would you like to achieve in 2015?

My goals for 2015 are to maintain my consistency with attendance, stay injury free, find my muscle ups and increase mobility. If that happens, results will follow. It's very easy to turn the alarm off and go to back to sleep.  My consistent attendance resulted in my best CrossFit year ever.  I have done CrossFit for almost 5 years. Every year, excluding 2014, I have had large gaps in my attendance.  When I say gaps, I mean months.  I would fall off the wagon and come up with every excuse not to get up and go.  I would then have to start all over.  In 2014, I averaged 3-4 days a week all year with no gaps. If I was on the road for work or vacation, I would drop in at the closest box. I spent a ton of money on t-shirts this year.  The consistency contributed to many GAINZ.  I even had the privilege of ringing the PR bell a few times.  For example, 1000 LB total in one day, my name on the Ladies of CrossFit sign for the first time ever, increases in my endurance and overall strength. In other words, regularly show up, put the work in and the results will follow.

What is your favorite thing about CSC CrossFit?

My favorite thing about CSC CrossFit is the community and coaches, especially the men and women of the 5:30 AM crew.  It takes a strange person to want get up at 5:30 AM and do CrossFit.  Kady and Bane have been great. They push me, give great coaching and support. They also put up with our whining shenanigans. The crew is very supportive of each other.  We may want to kick each other's butts in the WOD, but we are there for each other when one of us is struggling.  We all have those days when things just are not working and it's great to have everyone’s support. I would put our crew up against anyone. We would be tough to beat. #CompeteEveryday

What advice do you have for new CrossFitters?

My advice for a new CrossFitter is to stick with it. Many things may be foreign or you haven't done the movements since high school.  If you stick with it and understand that it takes some time to develop the skills, you will be great.  When I first started, my goal was to do the women's RX. I then moved to somewhere in between to now I do everything RX, but one or two movements. (MU, Pistols) Do not be ashamed to scale the workouts. Do what you can handle and don't get hurt. Remember there is a difference between hurt and sore.

How did you discover (CSC) CrossFit?

I worked out with Robert and Daniel at another box.  When they told me they were opening their own box, I jumped over with them.

What fitness accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my ability to hang with the "kids" in my class.  Old guys rule!

Name your three favorite CrossFit movements or lifts.

My favorite movements are cleans, swings, any type of shoulder press and anything that uses chalk. ;)
